Psalm 119 “According to Your Word”

Psalm 119, “According to your word”—importance of the Bible in life

“According to your word” is found 12 times in Psalm 119 (NASB). In these instances it expresses “according to the standard” or “as your word teaches.” The Scripture is the standard or model or guide for how we live. “Word” is the translation two Hebrew words: dabar 6 times, translated word; and imrah 6 times, translated word but also meaning speech. “According to” is the translation of the preposition kaph, a particle of comparison (like, as much as, about, suitable to, according to). Another preposition is lamed (to, toward, at, about, concerning) used in Ps 119.154.

  1. Ps 119:9     How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word.  Promote righteousness. (dabar)
  2. Ps 119:25     My soul cleaves to the dust; Revive me according to Your word.  Encourage and uplift. (dabar)
  3. Ps 119:28     My soul weeps because of grief; Strengthen me according to Your word.  Ability to handle grief. (dabar)
  4. Ps 119:41     May Your lovingkindnesses also come to me, O Lord, Your salvation according to Your word; Experience God’s gracious love and deliverance. (imrah)
  5. Ps 119:58     I sought Your favor with all my heart; Be gracious to me according to Your word.  Experience God’s grace. (imrah)
  6. Ps 119:65     You have dealt well with Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word.  God has done good for us. (dabar)
  7. Ps 119:76     O may Your lovingkindness comfort me, According to Your word to Your servant.  Experience comfort. (imrah)
  8. Ps 119:107     I am exceedingly afflicted; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.  Encourage and lift up. (dabar)
  9. Ps 119:116     Sustain me according to Your word, that I may live; And do not let me be ashamed of my hope.  Provide inner strength. (imrah)
  10. Ps 119:154     Plead my cause and redeem me; Revive me according to Your word.  Encourage and up lift. (imrah)
  11. Ps 119:169     Let my cry come before You, O Lord; Give me understanding according to Your word.  Understand what God is doing. (dabar)
  12. Ps 119:170     Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word. Physical deliverance. (imrah)
